EMPOWERING OUR TOMORROW
Saturday 12th August 2023 | 204 Edwards Ave, Mound Bayou, MS
Many of us here and elsewhere have rightly honored the main founder of Mound Bayou, Isaiah T. Montgomery, but few of us know or understand that the true visionary and originator of the dream of Mound Bayou was his father Benjamin Montgomery.
To paraphrase a passage in the Bible it says as long as the earth remains there will be seedtime and harvest.
Although Isaiah developed organized and instituted the dream, the true seed was that of his father Benjamin Montgomery. He had the audacity to possess a dream of self-governance and prosperity while enslaved on a Mississippi plantation. With this knowledge, we cannot help but honor his legacy, with the first year of the annual Benvision Award.
This award shall be given to honor those who in various categories help to harvest the ongoing vision that began in the heart of the father of our founder Isiah T. Montgomery. Thus we pay tribute to the man who took the first step of faith, the original visionary, Ben Montgomery with this first Benvision award.
The Mound Bayou Museum is a vital cultural institution that needs your support. With your contributions, we can continue to expand our exhibits and programs, educate future generations, and ensure that the legacy of the
Mound Bayou community lives on.
The Mound Bayou Museum is dedicated to exploring, expanding, and exposing the magnificent history of one of the oldest African American established communities in the most inhospitable and dangerous state in the country.
We are now looking to expand the museum into a
Children Museum with your help.
There are only a few places in the United States that were founded and developed by ex-slaves or descendants of American slaves. Mound
Bayou carries the reputation of being one of the oldest, African American-founded, and existing communities of such note.
The historical location of the "Mound Bayou" community was used and continues to attract the most knowledgeable academic minds together
to tell the story of who we are and the accomplishments of our ancestors.
Besides Mound Bayou's history, we tell the story of the accomplishments of the men and women of the surrounding areas, such as Fannie Lou Hamer, Amzie Moore, Medgar Evers, and many others, including blues musicians.
Mound Bayou has a rich history in the medical field and the museum reflects on the pioneering spirit and accomplishments that were forged here in that field.
Slave labor, back in that day, was a very brutal hardship for those who experienced it. These men and women would do anything it took to make their tasks easier and more effective, so they became very adept at innovation and creating products and ideas. The museum is dedicated to investigating, uncovering, and properly crediting those inventions to the people that God had blessed with the vision and ability to create them.
